Truck driver in court over reckless driving

A truck driver identified as Ifeanyi Basil Odili was on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly driving recklessly and with expired insurance certificate in Apapa.

Odili is facing a four-count charge bothering on reckless driving, inconsiderate driving and driving with expired certificate.

The prosecutor, Insp. Augustine Ejembi told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 26, 2018 at about 4:30pm along Kirikiri Road, Apapa.

Ejembi said, “The defendant being the driver in charge of MIB-LORRY Truck with registration number AGL 977 XM, drove same in a dangerous manner and reckless manner.”

The prosecutor also said that the defendant drove the truck on the public highway in a careless and inconsiderate manner.

Ejembi added that when his particulars were searched, the defendant was driving with expired certificate of insurance.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 167 (1), 19, 3(2) Cap 124 and 189 (2) of Road Traffic Law 2012.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.

The defence counsel, Glanville Ockiya asked the court to grant his client lenient bail conditions on the grounds that his client was in the process of renewing his insurance certificate.

The Magistrate, O.M Ajayi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety. The surety according to the Magistrate must show the court the proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case till June 30, 2018 for mention.
