A 42-year-old visa agent, identified as John Anthony Tobechukwu, was on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing N450,000 under the false pretence to procure visa in Apapa.
Tobechukwu is facing a two-count charge of false pretence and stealing.
The prosecutor, Inspector Julius Babatope, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on September 26, 2018 and October 28, 2018 at about 10am at No 216, Idewu Street, Olodi-Apapa.
“The defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N450,000 from one Ruth Godwin under the pretence that he was going to procure a travelling visa for her, a representation he knew to be false,” Babatope said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole the sum of N450,000 property of one Ruth Godwin.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Enitan Ojudun granted him N100,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum.
The sureties are required to furnish the court with proof of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
Ojudun ordered the defendant to be remanded in prison pending the bail conditions are meant.
He adjourned the case till August 8, 2019 for mention.
