A 33-year-old clearing agent, Sheriff Suma, was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing the sum of N350,000 from an exporter in Lagos.
Suma is facing a three-count charge bordering on false pretence, stealing and breach of peace.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Marvellous Obonagha, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on December 26, 2018 in Festac Town, Lagos.
“The defendant obtained the cash sum of N350,000 from one Mr Benjamin Chima under the pretence to facilitate a business link, a representation he knew to be false,” Obonagha said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole the sum of N350,000 from Mr Benjamin Chima and conducted himself in a manner that caused fear and disturbed the peace of Mr Benjamin Chima.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 314(1)(a), 280(1) and 44(4) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Magistrate K.A Ariyo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case till February 7, 2019 for mention.
