Man docked for N3.7m car hire purchase fraud

A 34-year-old man, identified as Christian Besmark, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for alleged fraud and stealing relating to obtaining a car on hire purchase.

The prosecutor, Inspector Austine Ejembi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on November 14, 2018 at Olodi-Apapa.

“The defendant fraudulently obtained a Sienna car with registration number EPE 256 FJ, on the pretence of hire purchase to remit the sum of N3,700,000, a representation he knew to be false,” Ejembi said.

The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole the sum of N340,000 property of Jovita Ozioma.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 323 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Ayisha Grillo granted him bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties each in like sum. The sureties are required to furnish the court with evidence of two years tax payment to Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case till July 31, 2019 for mention.
