For allegedly stealing a N20,000 mobile telephone belonging to a clearing agent in Apapa, a 27-year-old man identified as Amobi Patrick was on Wednesday admitted to a bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Patrick was arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing phone and cash in the office of the agent.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Marvellous Ogbongha told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 21, 2018 at about 3:45pm at No 8, Muyibi Street, Olodi Apapa.
Ogbongha said, “The defendant stole one cool pad handset valued N20,000 and cash of N24,550 property of one Gbenga Onanuga.”
According to him, the offence is punishable under section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
When the defence counsel asked the court to grant his client lenient bail, the prosecutor reminded the court that the defendant had been remanded in prison before and still went back to commit crime. He therefore asked that the bail conditions should be stringent.
The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.
In his ruling for the bail application, Magistrate O.S Abioye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must be gainfully employed and must furnish the court with proof of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till June 13, 2018 for mention.
