Police arraign truck driver’s wife for assaulting pregnant woman

The police on Thursday arraigned the wife of a truck driver, Ngozi Akoma (33), before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman at her residence.

Akoma is facing a one-count charge of assault. She pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Kolade Tedunjaye, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 14, 2020 at about 11am at No 19, Fijabi Street, Amukoko, Lagos.

“The defendant unlawfully assaulted one Mabel Chukwudi by giving her slaps severally and fist blow in her stomach knowing fully well that she is pregnant,” Tedunjaye said.

According to her, the offence is punishable under section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

Magistrate B.M. Amore remanded the defendant in prison custody and adjourned the matter till March 12, 2020 for trial.
