The Seme Border Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over $6million fake notes to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The command’s Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, did the handover on Tuesday while addressing journalists on the command’s activities in the first quarter of 2023.
Nnadi said the command intercepted 2,242 bags of smuggled rice and seven tankers of premium motor spirit (petrol), among others in the first quarter of the year.
Other seizures within the period, according to him, include 550 pieces of donkey skin worth about N10.7 million; 227,610 liters of petrol worth N51 million; six Maltese international passports with the same picture of a lady but bearing different names and two Senegalese international passports.
He said the command also seized three Togolese international passports; four Republic of Benin international passports, one Republic of Niger international passport and ten international driving licenses of various countries.
He said the command recorded a shortfall in export to the tune of 75,000 metric tons during the period under review.
He said the command also generated N350 million in the first quarter of the year, representing 23.09 percent shortfall in comparison with the 2022 Q1 figure of N455 million.
“Recall that I had earlier informed you that the economic policy of the Republic of Benin who charge fees on goods in transit to Nigeria constitute tariff barriers to trade along the corridor. These affected the command’s revenue and there is a need for urgent review,” he said.
