Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber, the Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri- Erewa as the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NDC).

She is the first CEO of the new commission.

Dabiri-Erewa’s confirmation was announced after Rose Oko, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations presented the report of the committee on Thursday.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, described Dabiri-Erewa’s nomination as one that was fully merited.

“On behalf of the Eighth Senate, let me congratulate Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa on this appointment, which is well deserved.

“We wish her a successful tenure and hope she will be a great Ambassador for the country,” Saraki said.

The Senate president also commended the committee for its effort in ensuring that the process of the confirmation was concluded on time.

Dabiri-Erewa was a three-term member of the House of Representatives representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency in Lagos between 2003 and 2015.

During her time in the green chamber, she chaired the House Committee on Diaspora Affairs. She also sponsored the bill seeking the establishment of the NDC.
