A 36-year-old clearing agent, Olagoke Balogun, was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N6.2 million for clearing two containers at Tin-Can Island, Apapa.
Balogun is facing a two-count charge of false pretence and stealing.
The port prosecutor, Sergeant Adeniyi Balogun, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on August 23, 2018 at 2:30pm at Tin-Can Island, Apapa.
“The defendant obtained the sum of N6.2 million from one Odedeji Olatoye, under the pretence to clear two containers containing eight different types of cars from the port,” Balogun said.
The prosecutor added that the defendant stole the sum of N6.2 million by converting the money to his own use being the property of one Odedeji Olatoye.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 314 and 287 (3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Magistrate O.S Abioye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two responsible sureties each in like sum.
The sureties, according to the Magistrate must be gainfully employed in a reputable organization and must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till December 17, 2018 for mention.
