The first batch of three new gas fired power plants to be built in Abuja, Kaduna and Kano by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its joint venture partners will be completed by 2019.
Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, said this in an interview at the formal opening of the Nigerian exhibition stand at the ongoing Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, United States of America.
Baru who was represented by the Corporation’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Gas and Power, Engr. Saidu Mohammed added that the three plants combined will generate up to 3000 Megawatts (MW) of power.
NNPC currently has interest in two power plants, one in Okpai, Delta State and the other in Afam, Rivers State, which were built by its Joint Ventures with Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) and Shell. These two power plants collectively generate up to 1,000 megawatts.
Mohammed said that by the time the three plants are completed, NNPC will generate about 4, 000 MW of power, which will significantly boost power supply in the country.
