A 45-year-old visa agent, George Taju, was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N470,000 from applicants at Kirikiri, Apapa.
Taju is facing a two-count charge bordering on false pretense and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Friday Inedu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 11, 2018 at about 11am at Kirikiri Road, Olodi-Apapa.
“The defendant obtained the sum of N321,000 from one Chika Mbaseyi and N150,000 from one Eneh Jane, with the pretence to get USA visa for them, a representation he knew to be false,” Inedu said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole a total sum of N471,000 property of Chika Mbaseyi and Eneh Jane.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Magistrate, Temitope Babalola granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till November 21, 2018 for mention.
